Pursuing the difficulties with using editor "File Browser" function in the 3.3.1 editor,
the forum discussion "410-i-cant-see-files-in-filebrowser" led to some very helpful fixes
posted by awills, especially this one:

I was out of touch for a week or so, and very happy to install this patch upon my return.
However, I still have a problem, but that topic is now locked, so I'm posting here
instead.
I want to upgrade my online production site to 1.5.20 and JCKeditor 3.3.1. My users,
though, depend on a functionality that I have been unable to discover in 3.3.1. The
production system is Joomla 1.5.15 with FCKeditor version 2.6.4.1. That editor offers a
"Browse Server" button when either the "Insert/Edit Link" function or the "Insert/Edit
Image" function are invoked from the Front End. The fix posted in the above response #863
enables all of this functionality for me in the Back End. But still in the Front End
there is no "Browse Server" button offered in either of these dialogs.

to a request for file browser functionality, awills mentions that the "general link
download dialog" offers this functionality, and then suggests that a professional
solution is also available in the JDocLink plugin.
It is true that all the functionality needed for my (non-professional) application can be
found in the "Link" dialog: specifically, the ability to "Browse Server" and upload to
the server while browsing. My problem is that this functionality is NOT present when the
editor is invoked in the Front End.
I'm hoping that another patch to 3.3.1 can fix this shortcoming.
I posted all details of my configuration here:

... although the problem now is much simpler, thanks to your patches ... the only problem
remaining is that the "Browse Server" button appears only in the Back End, not the Front
End.
